Banner Series - LOL 111

Our examination of banners carried by the local Newtownards lodges continues with the focus on Ulster’s Chosen Few LOL 111.

This lodge was formed in the early 1850s and for a period belonged to District No.11. Among its early members was local builder Samuel McCreight, who was responsible for constructing the current Orange Hall in Mary Street.

Ulster's Chosen Few unfurled a new banner in the Mary Street hall on 18th June 2016. Launched to coincide with the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, the new banner remembers two brethren of the lodge, who served with distinction during the Great War. The main image is of sash-wearing servicemen taking part in the Battle of the Somme.

The other famous battle, that fought at the Boyne, is depicted on the reverse, with King William shown crossing the river on his white horse. The lodge also carried a smaller bannerette, which features Scrabo Tower as its main image.
